Values are the foundation of who we are as a church…
“Values affect what we think and, consequently, what we do. Our values are an intrinsic part of us, although we seldom think about them in a conscious fashion. They determine the ideas, principles and concepts a person or group can accept, assimilate, remember and transmit” - John Wimber
1. A Lifestyle of Worship
We value worship that is participative, that is full of life, which engages us in intimacy and uses various forms appropriate to the experiential depth and breadth of God. We believe worship is far more than singing songs; true worship is about our life direction expressed in many different ways. We are hungry to know God’s presence, hear His voice and follow hard after Him. (Psalm 63:1-3; Romans 12:1-2)
2. Obedient to the Holy Spirit
We honour Jesus as our Head and the Holy Spirit as our Counsellor. We seek to be responsive to the Holy Spirit in life and ministry. (Galatians 5:5; Romans 8:14)
3. Belonging
We believe that Christian community is not so much a “bounded set” (clear boundary markers determining who’s “in” and who’s “out”) as it is a “centered set”—many people at various stages in relation to the Kingdom, to the rule of God in their life. Therefore we value our church being overtly inclusive, that celebrates everyone from the “fully committed” to seekers merely exploring the Way of Jesus.
4. Relational
We value being a relational church and seek to honour all, single or married, and we want to enable and support mature relationships and family growth. (Romans 12:9,10)
5. Accountable Friendships
We believe it is God’s intention to bring us into a family that actively helps each other along the way of following Jesus. We would like every person to find a small circle of trusting friendships in which they are encouraged and challenged toward seeing Jesus formed in and through their lives. (Romans 15:14; Hebrews 3:13; James 5:16)
6. Spirituality Formation
Learning from some of the ancient strands of the christian faith. We want to cultivate an interior life that, through habitual practice, can sustain and support the kind of radical life Jesus invites us into. Discipleship is about us taking seriously the call of Jesus to follow hard after him.
7. Risk Taking
We want to be partakers and not just spectators, which we hope will result in us taking lots of risks and cultivating a culture of participation - the priesthood of all. We believe it’s okay to fail, even as we believe it’s important to evaluate quality and effectiveness in all we do. (1 Peter 2:9; Galatians 3:28)
8. Simplicity & Reality
We wish to do nothing for “religious effect” but rather to operate in natural low-key, non-hype patterns. We desire to do the ministry of Christ with joy in a naturally supernatural way. We aim to walk in the Spirit and see real supernatural works of God. We aim also to function on the natural plane based on God’s leading in conjunction with excellent, relational thinking. (James 1:5)
9. Creative & Innovative
We believe God is the source of all creativity and we embrace God-inspired creativity as an integral and authentic expression of our church community. (Exodus 35:30-35, Genesis 1:1-2, Psalm 45:1, Proverbs 8:22-31)
10. Holistic
We want to blur the lines between everyday life and church, we are more concerned with equipping and releasing the dispersed church in the local community than just maintaining meetings. Living with the premise that the whole of life is spiritual, we try not to operate by compartmentalising our lives.
11. Servant Leadership
Jesus modeled leadership as a servant, we want to do the same by releasing men and women equally through training that attracts, develops, trains and releases leaders to serve alongside, and not rule over each other, in order to bring out the best in each other. (Mark 10:37,44-45)
12. Justice
We want to be active in campaigning and petitioning against injustices both on our doorsteps and around the world. We are very keen to be ethical consumers and resist materialism. We believe in social activism at all levels, even as we recognise that the Church has historically been most effective when it has worked from the margins of society. (Isaiah 58:6-7; Luke 4:16-21)
13. The Mercy of God
We believe that mercy is fundamental to all that God does in salvation. We, therefore, aim to extend mercy to one another and to all to whom we minister. (Colossians 3:12,13)
14. Being Missional
We are the message - we want to open up the whole of our lives for others to join us. We understand the mission of the church to be nothing less than embodying the Kingdom of God in its life, deeds, and words. The mission of Christian community is all about becoming the very life of Jesus in the world.
15. Doing Things Well
We seek to make sure that all that we do, from the way we communicate, to our publications, to the environment in which we meet, is all done to best of our ability - we seek to offer our best to God at all times. (Matthew 26: 6-12)
16. Relevant to our Culture
We want to speak, act and dress in a way that is true to ourselves and relevant to our culture. We understand that the culture in which we live is a changing one and we are seeking to retell the Christian story in that context. (I Corinthians 9:19-23)
17. The Kingdom of God
We understand the kingdom as being both present and future, and that the kingdom - the rule of God - is central to our understanding of the gospel and the teachings of Jesus. We aim to move in the signs of the present fulfillment of the kingdom, ministering through the Holy Spirit’s gifts, and seeing God heal and work wonders as a result. (Mark 1:14-15)
18. Knowing we’re not there yet…
We value remaining a “seeking” community—convinced we do not have all the answers, we need to be honest about where we are and have the ability to keep evolving as we walk out this journey together.
