Monday 7th to Friday 11th September we are taking the week to pray and fast for the launch of the Alpha Course.
On Monday 7th September we will email and post on social media different items for prayer and then we're asking you to choose a time throughout the week to pray and fast.
WAYS WE CAN FAST
There are two main ways we are approaching our week of prayer and fasting. You might choose to do either one or combination of both. You may wish to fast for the whole week or maybe just 1 or 2 days, there’s no right or wrong answer. Ask Jesus to lead and guide you as you choose what to commit to during this week.
The first type is a food fast, which is a self-denial of food that you normally would eat. This can range anywhere from fasting all forms of food (only drinking water/ juice, etc.) to just giving up specific foods (examples: fast foods, junk foods, coffee, sweets). If you’ve never done any fasting before, a great way to begin is to fast one meal per day.
A media fast is another great way to unplug from the culture and focus on Jesus. Most of us spend way too much time on the Internet, watching TV or using our mobile phones? There is no doubt that disconnecting from unnecessary media for a week would be a sacrifice, but there’s a sweetness to doing something like this as an act of worship too. Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice! Psalm 141:2
Some other tips...
WEAN YOURSELF OFF CAFFEINE
Several days before your fast begins, you should start weaning yourself off caffeine. Some people experience unbearable headaches 2 to 3 days after ceasing to drink caffeinated products. During your fast you will already be acutely aware of your stomach. There is no need to add a second discomfort if it can be avoided.
BE AWARE OF YOUR EMOTIONS
Some people experience vast mood swings during periods of fasting. One moment they are totally focused on God and the next they are feeling so angry that their emotions come to the surface. Try and guard your emotions and when you start to feel that way maybe ask others to pray for you.
If you have any medical conditions that may be effected by fasting from food, we would suggest avoiding doing this or at least taking advice from your doctor first. There is no judgement or condemnation to be had if you are unable to take part in fasting from food during this week.
